What are you playing???

I'm playing in two weekly games: playing a paladin in Hoard of the Dragon Queen (5e) and running Strength of Thousands (PF2e), both using Fantasy Grounds as a gaming table.

I'm DMing one monthly 5e game where we are playing Waterdeep Dragon Heist (with some setting changes and the really good remix from TheAlexandrian.com).

Video Games: Red Dead Redemption 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Core Keeper

Board Games: Brass Birmingham, Wavelength, Puerto Rico, Mercado de Lisboa, Dominion

And I've been trying to play guitar whenever I get a few minutes, too :)

Tabletop: I run a weekly 3.5e game, using Discord for voice chat and Roll20 as a gaming table. It's a megadungeon in my homebrewed Tolrea setting, but the play style is much more beer-and-pretzels than our usual PbP fare on these boards, because the group is a wildly different composition--I started this game because my wife's bestie from high school invited us into a Savage Worlds campaign when the pandemic was just a couple months old, and she'd never actually played D&D. So I scraped something together and did it. It's drawing to a conclusion, having gone from level 1-12. I expect that they'll stop around level 13-15, with the specifics depending on how quickly they wrap up enough "plot" points to feel like it's done.

When it's done, I may offer to run something for folks from here. That's always a crap shoot, given how hard scheduling can be for adults with responsibilities.

Video Games: Rarely, I play Storybook Brawl; DM stuff has been eating most of my discretional time for gaming. I was learning to play guitar via Rocksmith when the pandemic started, but DMing ate that once they got into the mid-levels. I'll start over again sometime after my current campaign finishes up.

I'm not as active in games as I used to be, unfortunately. When my best friend and I -who live across an entire continent from one another- can find a few hours leisure time together, we typically play American Truck Simulator. I've already played through Red Dead Redemption 2 a couple of times now, but I got my wife playing it, so I've been able to snatch some moments of enjoyment watching her reactions to the emotional rollercoaster that is that game. I recently picked up the rejiggered version of Halo: Combat Evolved on Steam for a couple of dollars because I was curious how it looked after the graphical updating. I played through half the campaign and will probably play the other half tonight while I wait for the chicken stock I'm cooking to be ready.

Since my last post, my best friend bought me a copy of Elden Ring for the PC because he wanted to try out the game's limited multiplayer mode. I've put a couple of hours into it at this point and thus far I like it. It feels like a more accessible version of the Dark Souls games; having kept the frustrating bosses who constantly and repeatedly stomp you into the dirt, but allowing you to turn around and explore some different area of the game for a while rather than forcing you to continue your frustration. The person at work who told me it "beats the shit out of Red Dead Redemption 2 for story" is a dirty lying deceiver. But it's certainly pretty. And it does have about a billion little options in it that can be utilized or not depending on how you want to play, which does help flesh out the experience a lot.

My daughter is playing Elden Ring right now and she's loving it. I'm waiting for the price to drop a bit before I pick it up, although more than likely I'll just end up getting it whenever my friends all start jumping on board. It's hard to imagine that the story is as good as RDR2's, but GRRM was involved, so who knows!

For story, there's really no comparison. Elden Ring's idea of a story is to drop you off immediately into a world that feels like it might have been a fever dream Neil Gaiman had while on too much NyQuil without an ounce of explanation of how, what, or why. Which totally works, don't get me wrong. But it feels less like a story and more like you're discovering the background lore of the game as you go. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 had an actual story that was detailed and compelling enough that a couple of the voice actors won acting awards for their performances. It's apples and oranges.
