Re: Mental Health

Hey. I've been living with major depressive disorder since I was about 13. I'm in my 40s now, and for most of the approximately 30 years that I have lived with my illness, I was untreated. Mostly, that was because I'd watched close family members have a string of bad experiences with mental health p...

Re: What Are You Reading?

Weirdly, I didn't find the Kushiel books all that smutty. Like, I get that as a series, Carey's work deals frankly with queer characters who are involved in sex work, kink, and so on. And it's integral to the plot, sometimes. But I don't think that these books are really "about" the sex st...

Re: New Users Post Here

We had a spot of trouble with spambots recently, so I locked things down to keep them under control while I figured out an alternative to CAPTCHA. The challenges I've got configured now seem to be doing a good job, so I'm hoping to loosen up again soon.

Re: So, what's new?

Yeah, hive theft is a thing. Not much of a problem around my area, but it's a real phenomenon. The messed up part is that stealing bees is something that you need to be a beekeeper to do. Trying it without the requisite knowledge is a good way to get dead. Mail-order bees like Fixxxer is talking abo...

Re: So, what's new?

It sounds like a shitty way to find out bee stings, allergies to apivenom, etc. for anyone who isn't already familiar with what those things are like. You and I grew up in rural/suburban environments, and I imagine we both spent some time outdoors, doing stupid kid stuff that raises your chance of g...

Re: So, what's new?

I'm sorry to hear about your child's difficulties. I hope it works out to everyone's satisfaction. And yeah, sometimes there are incidents where the succession in a colony of bees gets a little messy. It's unusual, but not rare, and most of the time it happens when the colony has just swarmed. The m...

Re: So, what's new?

It's been fun. The conventional wisdom is that it's best to start with at least two colonies, and that's really true; if you have more than one, it's easier to tell when something's wrong with one of them, and you have more options regarding how you deal with the problem. I started with package bees...
